Fragrance is an often overlooked accessory. Just as completing your look with the perfect handbag, jewelry and other accessory items can make you look and feel better, so can the application of your favorite body fragrance.

The emotional benefits of body fragrance are many. First and foremost, you get the boost to your confidence in knowing that you smell great. Your favorite fragrance can also be a calming, comforting influence as you go through your busy day. Our sense of smell is one of the strongest of all senses and can actually trigger memories more powerfully than any other sense. Most of us have a favorite perfume or cologne and when we spray it on, we are immediately reminded of pleasant times associated with that fragrance.

Yet another benefit of body fragrance is that of making a positive impression on others. Of course, there are those who find strong perfumes and colognes offensive, so we have to be careful not to overdo it. Most high-end fragrances require only a small application for maximum effectiveness. There is nothing worse than drenching oneself in any fragrance. There are a couple ways you can make sure you don’t go overboard. First, consider using a powder or lotion version of your favorite fragrance for daytime wear when you might be closely confined with others. You still get the benefit of the fragrance, but usually in a much lighter concentration than with a spray cologne or perfume.

Another way to avoid overuse of colognes and perfumes is to use the technique of spraying the mist into the air directly in front of you and walking through it rather than spraying it directly onto your body or clothing. If you’re using a good perfume or cologne, this is all it should take to give yourself a lasting and appropriate amount of scent. If you’re not using a good perfume or cologne, throw it away and invest in something of quality. Cheap perfume or cologne is simply bad in any concentration and sends its own message.

The fragrances you choose to wear can say a lot about your personality, helping you to make a statement about yourself and therefore adding another emotional benefit of establishing your uniqueness. While you should, of course, choose what you truly love, there are a few things to consider about appropriateness of scent. Everyone’s body chemistry is slightly different, so you should always try the fragrance out before you invest in it. Go to your favorite department store and spray on a little. Walk around for a couple hours and see how the fragrance changes and evolves on you. Your co-workers at the office probably won’t appreciate your “Red Hot Passion” nearly as much as your significant other might.

Before Annick Goutal designed wonderful perfume, she was a prize winning pianist and a successful model. Annick’s personal life was less than calm; she separated from her partner after a relationship that gave her a beautiful daughter, leaving just her and her daughter Camille. Soon after, Annick married a wonderful man from her childhood but then she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to overcome that. After that she decided to go into the skin cream business with a friend. They soon discovered that they had two things missing in their business, packaging and fragrance.

Annick met popular perfumer Henri Sorsana in 1977 and the next seven years of her life were spent remembering ingredients and working on the already brilliant sense of smell she had. Folavril, Passion and Eau d’Hadrien were her first three major fragrances. Once those three were launched she opened her first salon.

Annick Goutal has become very popular for her fragrances and admits that it is even worn by famous individuals. Annick also says that her fragrance, Eau d’Camille was inspired by her daughter because when she was younger she told her mother that she wanted fragrance like the ivy tree they had outside. Charlotte, her stepdaughter, also wanted a fragrance but she preferred something slightly less naïve, and this is where Eau de Charlotte comes from. And for her husband she created sables.

But it was not all over for the Goutal’s when Annick passed away. This was a very sad and devastating time for all who knew her and knew what an amazing person she was. But, after Annick passed away, her daughter Camille decided to carry on the business and she did a very good job, just as good as her mother.

The Perfumer

The task of composing perfumes that will sell is to enhance an expert on perfume composition or known in the fragrance industry as the perfumer. They are also sometimes referred to as “The Nose” due to their fine sense of smell and skill in smell composition. The perfumer is effectively an artist who is trained in depth on the concepts of fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with their fragrance compositions.

A perfumer must have knowledge of a large variety of fragrance ingredients and smell. They must be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with other fragrances. As well, they must know how each ingredient reveals itself through time when mixed with other ingredients.

The composition of a perfume begins when the perfumer’s employer’s are given a brief which will contain the specifications for the desired perfume that the organisation is trying to achieve. The employees are given several tasks to complete. They are expected to describe what the perfume smells like, their feelings after smelling the perfume, when the perfume should be worn, also the price of the perfume oil concentrate. This will determine what aromatics and fragrance ingredients can/will be used in the perfume composition.

This process is an in depth and tedious task but it is essential. The perfumer will then start a process of blending various perfume mixtures and try to achieve the outcome the brief. This process can take several months or years. Once all the information is gathered the perfume composition may be used as a fragrance enhancement in shampoos, make-up, detergents, etc or it may be marketed and sold directly to the public as a fine fragrance.

Technique

Perfume oils usually contain tens to hundreds of ingredients. These ingredients can be roughly grouped into four groups: primary scents, modifiers, blenders and fixatives (refer notes below).

Instead of building a perfume from “ground up”, many modern perfumes and colognes are made using fragrance bases, which are essential oils and aromatic chemicals. The effort used in developing bases by fragrance companies or individual perfumers may equal that of a marketed perfume, since they are useful in that they are reusable.

The perfume’s fragrance oils are then blended with ethyl alcohol and water, aged in tanks for a minimum of 14 days and filtered through processing equipment to remove any sediment and particles before the solution can be filled into the perfume bottles.

Notes:

• Primary scents: Can consist of one or a few main ingredients for a certain concept, such a “rose”. Alternatively, multiple ingredients can be used together to create an “abstract” primary scent that does not bear a resemblance to a natural ingredient. For instance, jasmine and rose scents are commonly blends for abstract floral fragrances. Cola flavourant is a good example of an abstract primary scent.
• Modifiers: These ingredients alter the primary scent to give the perfume a certain desired character: for instance, fruit esters may be included in a floral primary to create a fruity floral; calone and citrus scents can be added to create a “fresher” floral. The cherry scent in cherry cola can be considered a modifier.
• Blenders: A large group of ingredients that smooth out the transitions of a perfume between different “layers” or bases. Common blending ingredients include linalool and hydroxycitronellol.
• Fixatives: Used to support the primary scent by bolstering it. Many resins and wood scents, and amber bases are used for fixative purposes.

Fragrances have been used for a very long time to make someone smell good or better. It has also been used as an aromatherapy for those who may suffer from some sickness or ailment. Through the years, fragrance has developed into several types that include perfumes, eau de parfums, eau de toilette and eau de cologne. The difference among these types of fragrance is in the concentration levels of essential oils that are mixed into them.

Perfumes have the highest concentration of perfume oils (around 20 - 40 percent), followed by eau de parfum, eau de toilette and lastly eau de cologne, which have around 2 - 5 percent perfume or essential oils. Perfume oils are usually derived from plants and other organic or natural sources such as animals or lichens. Synthetic scents are also readily available. Perfumes last longer and are stronger than all the other fragrances. Eau de cologne on the other hand needs to be applied several times a day if you wish to maintain the scent because they do not last long and the fragrance can be fleeting.

The Fragrance Wheel

The fragrance wheel is a method of classifying the different scents available in the industry today. In this particular wheel there are five main or standard classifications namely, floral, oriental, fresh, woody and fougere. As their name imply, the main fragrance in a scent falls in one of the classifications. Fougere is a combination of two or more of the other standard scents in the wheel.

In the said wheel, floral, soft floral and floral oriental fall under the floral classification while soft oriental, oriental and woody oriental are under the oriental classification. Wood, mossy woods and dry woods fall under the woody classification of fragrances and citrus, green and water are under the fresh classification.

Uses of Fragrance

We use scents to basically improve the smell of an area or enhance a person. Fragrance is also used to improve a person’s well being in the form of aromatherapy. A person’s sense of smell can affect the overall attitude and personality of an individual. Aromatherapy ha long been used to promote a relaxed atmosphere or to induce energy and spirit in a person.

Fragrance has also been used to mask a particularly bad smell. In cases like these, you would need a stronger scent or perfume to be able to fully mask an odor that is undesirable. Many people have aromatherapy candles in their homes and also scented potpourri to add to the ambience of their homes.

Since earliest history, the perfume has always been a part of human culture. It is used on hair, body with oil, flower, herb extract. It attracts friends to be close to because wearing scent is pleasurable and make other people feeling wonderful.

7. The storage condition room should be a temperature out of sunlight and away from the bright, cool and dark area. Do not place near heat or light. Extreme heat causes a fragrance to oxidize or change its odor. The ideal for the best condition for storage perfume is room temperature.

8. Spray a damp cloth with fragrance and throw it into the dryer with your clothing to scent them beautifully

9. We do not recommend spraying perfumes directly on clothes because some fabrics may stain. If stains occur, they can usually come out when washed. Always apply your fragrance items before dressing

10. If you want to choose the fragrance for someone it is good rule to buy the classic fragrance. A fragrance that has been on the market for decades is not as risky as new fragrances on the market. The age of the recipient can also influence your choice. If you are purchasing for woman who is your college age, desire, potion, eternal may be appropriate. Lighter floral fragrances are acceptable to almost everyone. Heavier perfumes with oriental notes are more risky.

11. If you notice that the perfume is thick, its color changes drastically and there is a sour smell upon opening, this means the perfume has deteriorated.

12. Increasing body temperature can make the scent and expanding of perfume stronger so it is better to use light perfume for the warm months.

You can easily use fragrance and perfume to evoke a mood. In most cases, the mood you will want to evoke is romance. The ancient Egyptians knew all about how to use the powers of perfume to evoke romance and which scents were most pleasing. The secrets have been passed down through the ages and even today, people still use perfume and fragrance as a romantic enticement.

When wearing perfume or fragrance to the office, you will want to be sure that you use a light fragrance that is not overpowering. The perfume will get all over your car and you will end up hating the smell of your favorite women’s or men’s fragrance. This also goes for purses, bags and sunglasses, as well.

But if you’re a heavy user of the discount fragrance and you turn it over quickly it will last long enough if left away from direct light. Tip 1:

Perfume never has the exactly same fragrance on different people. Don’t choose a perfume just because you like the fragrance on someone else. Perfume will interact differently with each individual’s body chemistry.

When sampling consider developing a perfume wardrobe. A perfume wardrobe is like a clothing wardrobe, with perfumes for different seasons, occasions, and moods. A perfume for each of, casual, evening and romantic wear will cover most requirements.

Tip 5:

It is perfume oils that give perfumes their fragrance. Check the category of the perfume when selecting your perfume. The higher the concentration of perfume oil the longer the perfume will last.

Perfume is one of those products that may influence our emotions. People`s sense of smell influences behavior and sets different moods. It may even bring up memories of the past. As a marketing tool, perfume is also present in our everyday lives and it can be found in lots of consumer products. Besides the fact that perfume is so popular, have you ever wandered how it came into being what it is today? What`s the history of perfume?

Some anthropologists say that perfume was used by primitive man thru the burning of gums and resins for incense. Eventually from 7000 to 4000 bc, richly scented plants, animal and fatty oils of olive and sesame are thought to have been combined with fragrant plants to create original ointments.

Three thousand years ago in ancient Egypt, historians believe that perfume was first used in rituals, as part of their religious ceremonies, creating a pleasant smell. These scents came from gums, resin trees, oil and from a variety of plants resulting in a perfume unguent that was rubbed into the skin. Hundreds of years later, women of Egypt were using perfume for their cosmetic qualities. It is believed that Egytptian queen Cleopatra had her own exclusive balms and scents used as cosmetics and aphrodisiac, which helped her to conquer Julius Caesar and later Mark Anthony. Also from this same era, it is believed that perfume was used in Mesopotamia for ritual ceremonies. And farther east, in China, aromatic herbs were used for medicine purposes.

Later on as trade routes expanded, perfume became very popular and demand for scent products increased trade among different civilizations. Africa and India started to supply Middle Eastern civilization with spikenard and ginger. Syrians sold fragrant goods to Arabia. Mediterranean civilization began buying cymbopogon and ginger from South Arabia. And so the trade of scent goods kept on, and as it continued to swell, fragrance perfume was eventually introduced thru time to several civilizations such as Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and finally reintroduced hundreds of years later in Italy and France.

By the 13th century Italy was doing major trades of spices and perfumes with Eastern civilizations. Portugal and Spain were also trying to establish important trades of spices by having exclusive routes to the East. That`s how the new world of America got to be discovered.

As Italian perfume influence swept over neighboring countries, France began expanding the use of perfume by first offering perfumed gloves, which were most often perfumed with neroli or animal scents such as ambergris and civet. From then on, French perfume has become famous worldwide and today sets the standard for excellence.

Also France played a major role in reestablishing the use of perfume for therapeutic purposes in the western world. It has been reported that during Word War II, therapeutic perfume had been used in the treatment of wounds and burns, and later in the treatment of psychiatric problems.

Perfume has brought different people together in the past thru the trade of aromatic scents. It also played a major deal, since its trade meant economical power for the nations. And so the history of modern man has been greatly influenced by this special product, enabling new worlds to be discovered. On a personal level, perfume is capable of influencing people`s behavior and that by itself sets perfume in class by itself. Perhaps that`s what makes it so desirable by all of us.
