Essential oils can be used in many ways throughout your home as tools that can help you relax, meditate, reduce stress and sleep better. Most people do not use essential oils just because they do not know about all the benefits of using real essential oils instead of products that are scented with fragrance oils.

Real essential oils have medicinal and healing properties that can help you feel better everyday. Essential oils have been used in alternative medicine for thousands of years and lots of people use essential oils to stay healthy, reduce stress, and to just make their homes smell good.

There are hundreds of different essential oils that you can buy alone or in blends. Typically the essential oils that are used most often for relaxation are Lavender, Sandalwood, Rose and Ylang-Ylang. Essential oils can be purchased at natural food stores or co-ops or online, but when you buy essential oils make sure that you are buying real essential oils and not fragrance oils.

Not sure how to use essential oils around your home to help you relax? Here are just a few suggestions of ways that you can use around your home everyday to help you be more relaxed and less stressed:

In a hot bath - Add a few drops of essential oil to a hot bath to make it more relaxing

As a room fragrance - Mix a few drops of essential oil with some purified water and burn the mixture in a fragrance burner. Your whole room will smell lovely and everyone who comes into the room will feel more refreshed and relaxed.

Make your own relaxing body oil - Mix a few drops of essential oil with Sweet Almond oil or baby oil and use that instead of lotion after a hot bath or shower. Your skin will stay soft and smooth and you will stay relaxed.

Make your own scented candles - Rub a few drops of a relaxing essential oil on the candle that you use for meditation to help you increase your focus and relax more during meditation.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of applications. The aforementioned methods are only guidelines. So, whether diffused into the air or diluted in products, essential oils deodorize and perfume the air you breathe naturally. The bottom line is to remember the primary reason we use essential oils is to help us relax, so we can rest through out the night and wake up refreshed.

The Perfumer

The task of composing perfumes that will sell is to enhance an expert on perfume composition or known in the fragrance industry as the perfumer. They are also sometimes referred to as “The Nose” due to their fine sense of smell and skill in smell composition. The perfumer is effectively an artist who is trained in depth on the concepts of fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with their fragrance compositions.

A perfumer must have knowledge of a large variety of fragrance ingredients and smell. They must be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with other fragrances. As well, they must know how each ingredient reveals itself through time when mixed with other ingredients.

The composition of a perfume begins when the perfumer’s employer’s are given a brief which will contain the specifications for the desired perfume that the organisation is trying to achieve. The employees are given several tasks to complete. They are expected to describe what the perfume smells like, their feelings after smelling the perfume, when the perfume should be worn, also the price of the perfume oil concentrate. This will determine what aromatics and fragrance ingredients can/will be used in the perfume composition.

This process is an in depth and tedious task but it is essential. The perfumer will then start a process of blending various perfume mixtures and try to achieve the outcome the brief. This process can take several months or years. Once all the information is gathered the perfume composition may be used as a fragrance enhancement in shampoos, make-up, detergents, etc or it may be marketed and sold directly to the public as a fine fragrance.

Technique

Perfume oils usually contain tens to hundreds of ingredients. These ingredients can be roughly grouped into four groups: primary scents, modifiers, blenders and fixatives (refer notes below).

Instead of building a perfume from “ground up”, many modern perfumes and colognes are made using fragrance bases, which are essential oils and aromatic chemicals. The effort used in developing bases by fragrance companies or individual perfumers may equal that of a marketed perfume, since they are useful in that they are reusable.

The perfume’s fragrance oils are then blended with ethyl alcohol and water, aged in tanks for a minimum of 14 days and filtered through processing equipment to remove any sediment and particles before the solution can be filled into the perfume bottles.

Notes:

• Primary scents: Can consist of one or a few main ingredients for a certain concept, such a “rose”. Alternatively, multiple ingredients can be used together to create an “abstract” primary scent that does not bear a resemblance to a natural ingredient. For instance, jasmine and rose scents are commonly blends for abstract floral fragrances. Cola flavourant is a good example of an abstract primary scent.
• Modifiers: These ingredients alter the primary scent to give the perfume a certain desired character: for instance, fruit esters may be included in a floral primary to create a fruity floral; calone and citrus scents can be added to create a “fresher” floral. The cherry scent in cherry cola can be considered a modifier.
• Blenders: A large group of ingredients that smooth out the transitions of a perfume between different “layers” or bases. Common blending ingredients include linalool and hydroxycitronellol.
• Fixatives: Used to support the primary scent by bolstering it. Many resins and wood scents, and amber bases are used for fixative purposes.

While you may see the terms used interchangeably, there are differences between fragrance oils and essential oils. Both types of oils produce wonderfully aromatic candles and offer candle buyers much variety when it comes to choosing a candle scent. However, these two types of oils are unique unto themselves so it’s good to know the characteristics of each.

Fragrance oils are perfume oils. While some fragrance oil scents may contain all-natural oils, they are primarily synthetic in composition. Production of a synthetic scent comes about when chemists study a plant’s components and then reproduces those components artificially.

What’s great about fragrance oils is the endless variety of scents that result. Experimentation with different synthetic combinations yields many fine scents and scent combinations. Fragrance oils are great for producing pleasing berry and fruit scents, as these scents are not always obtainable naturally as essential oils. Fragrance oils are also long lasting and affordably priced.

Essential oils are natural chemicals that are the true essence of a plant. They are not oil-like as we often think of oil. They do not have a sticky, oily feel to them and are actually clearer in appearance. Some essential oils do have color to them. They come from the leaves, flowers, seeds, resin, stems, roots, and bark of botanicals. Essential oils are highly concentrated oils and are popular in aromatherapy. Extraction of essential oils from botanical sources takes place by one of four methods:

• Steam distillation, which uses heat to draw out essential oils; this is the most common method used today.
• Cold press extraction: This method removes oils from the skins of fruits without the damage heat can sometimes do.
• Chemical solvent extraction: This method uses solvents such as alcohol to extract harder to get essential oils.
• Effleurage method: This method involves odorless fats or oils absorbing the perfume of fresh flowers.

Essential oils and fragrance oils are similar in that they both provide wonderful scents for soy candles. Scent blends may contain some natural essential oil elements in combination with synthetic elements. Again, fragrance oils offer the opportunity to make many more scent types and combinations than pure essential oils.

Fragrance oils are considered as most important and essential oils among the people such as men and women. Fragrance oils are the blend of essential oils and it comprises of essential ingredients and flavors.

Fragrance oil comprises of fruits, vegetables, essential oils, herbs, woods, plants and any other rich blends existing in the world. Generally, fragrance oils are considered to be more desirable essential oil added for different skin care products of perfume and fragrance products. Fragrance oil fetches more demand among the people, because of its uniqueness and essential aromas. Fragrance oils are used to produce rich blends of aromas with different ingredients and flavors comprised from different natural sources.

With usage of fragrance oils, more number of perfume and fragrance products can be produced by the manufacturers. Manufacturers produce different kinds of perfume and fragrance products with the use of fragrance oils to meet the requirements of the customers. Different kinds of perfume products, fragrance products and skin care products can be produced from Fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are rich blends of essential oils, fruits, vegetables, woods and herbs. These rich blends will produce finite fragrance oils to the manufacturer to produced different perfume products.

Perfume, fragrance products produced from fragrance oils can be used for different seasons, climate, and occasions. Fragrance products can also be used during day or night time as per the requirement of the men and women. The main purpose of fragrance oils in perfume, fragrance products is to keep men and women cool, fresh, relaxed, happy and pleasant. Fragrance products such as cosmetics, shave gels, creams, body lotion, conditioners, deodorant and many other skin care products required for people can be produced from fragrance oils.

Preservation of fragrance oils enables to provide rich aromas after a long time. Care and maintenance is required for fragrance oils and proper precaution does not allow the aromas presented to be wasted. Fragrance oils are sold for reasonable prices in the market to enable men and women to be used during their day times. Fragrance oils are the most required essential oils among the people and it fetches the same demand among the customers for reasonable prices.

Perfume oils, or the “juice” of fragrance composition, are diluted with a suitable solvent to make the perfume more usable. This is done because undiluted oils either natural or synthetic contain high concentrations of volatile components that will likely result in allergic reactions and possibly injury when applied directly to skin or clothing. Dilutions of the fragrance oil can be done using solvents such as jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, and wax. The most common solvents for fragrance oil dilution is ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water. The percent of perfume oil by volume in a perfume is listed as follows:

Perfume: 20%-40% Fragrance compounds

• Eau de parfum (EDP) : 10-30% Fragrance compounds

• Eau de toilette (EDT) : 5-20% Fragrance compounds

• Eau de cologne (EDC) : 2-3% Fragrance compounds.

As the percentage of fragrance compounds decreases, the intensity and longevity of the scent decrease. It should be noted that different perfumeries or perfume houses assign different amounts of oils to each of their fragrances. As such, although the oil concentration of a fragrance in eau de parfum (EDP) dilution will necessarily be higher than the same fragrance in eau de toilette (EDT) form, the same trends may not necessarily apply to different perfume compositions with different perfume houses. To further complicate things, some fragrances with the same product name but having a different concentration name may not only differ in their formulas, but actually use different perfume oil mixtures altogether. For instance, in order to make the EDT version of a fragrance brighter and fresher than its EDP, the EDT oil may be modified to contain slightly more top notes or less base notes. In some cases, words such as “extreme” or “concentrate” appended to fragrance names might indicate completely different fragrances that relate only because of a similar fragrance content.
